200,427 visitors in 2019!

The European Center for Deported Resistance Members (CERD) welcomed more than 200,000 visitors in 2019, the highest total ever.

This numbers surpassed the previous record of 199,397 in 2005-2006, the first full year the CERD facility was opened to the public.

The year 2019 marked the start of major restoration projects - Memorial, Necropolis and watchtowers.  While these did not prevent visits, they did disturb the facility’s tranquility. However, the projects did not deter visitors, particularly groups, which saw an increase of 22% over the previous year. Visits by schoolchildren were particularly numerous in May (+ 24%), as were requests from their teachers to carry out educational projects.

The former Natzweiler concentration camp benefited from significant media coverage in 2018 with the broadcasting of two documentaries on major public channels, making the Center known to many French residents: "Hippocrates aux enfers" by Michel Cymes on France 2 and "Struthof, the forgotten camp" on RMC Découverte.

The European Center for the Deported Resistance Members is aware of its central role in transmitting the memory of the deportation and expects a continuous increase in visitors. We welcome our visitors to the Center so that they may pay proper respect to the deportees and all who suffered through the Nazi Occupation.
