The Villa-Kommandantur

STRUTHOF, pre-war tourist resort”All of us reached the top of the hill, which was completely deforested. There were terrible gusts kicking up snowy whirlwinds. On our right we passed a big farm with many outbuildings: Struthof. On the left we passed a small villa, with a swimming pool no less! That’s where the commander lived… a few hundred meters later we were at the camp gate, staggered on the slope.”

André RAGOT, French deportee, doctor, member of the Buckmaster network, arrested and imprisoned in Auxerre and Cherche-Midi in Paris before being deported with NN status to the Natzweiler-Struthof camp in November 1943. In 1944 he was beaten and locked in the bunker for arriving late to roll call.
