Commit Resist Fight
The three-part permanent exhibition is central to visiting the European Centre on Resistance and Deportation.
On the lobby’s right-hand side, at the end of a corridor striped with light and shadow, the film You Who Live shows the commitment and struggles of Europe’s resistance movements and asks visitors what role they might play to pass on the values they fought for.
On the lower level, visitors discover the Kartoffelkeller, excavated for the first time since the end of the war. The deportees themselves constructed this large reinforced concrete building between 1943 and 1944. The exhibition space, which is arranged in a U-shape around the cellar, features an impressive series of vaults and thick concrete walls.
Fourteen sections including many photographs illustrate the rise of Fascism and Nazism in Europe, Hitler’s policies and the resistance movements that rose up against oppression and fought for freedom. The exhibition ends with the building of Europe and new threats against peace.
