NACHTSCHICHT: night shift.

NACHT UND NEBEL: Night and Fog. On 7 and 12 December 1941 Marshal Keitel signed the Nacht und Nebel decrees, which authorized the internment of Communist ringleaders as well as anyone who committed attempts on the lives of German troops, espionage and sabotage, helped members of Allied forces, and illegally held weapons. The decrees stipulated that “these acts will be tried in the occupied territories only if it is probable that the main violators will receive the death penalty” and that “the trials in courts in Germany must take place behind closed doors and in the utmost secrecy”. The decrees only applied to the west: Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and France. The Gestapo arrested most of those caught under NN, the Wehrmacht arrested the rest. At first, NN prisoners were held in special prisons or camps such as Hinzert. Most were grouped together in Natzweiler-Struthof starting in November 1943.

NN: Nacht und Nebel. Nazi category of classification in the camps: Night and Fog. NN deportees had to paint those initials on their uniforms.

NAP: Noyautage des Administrations Publiques (“infiltration of the civil service”). Branch of Combat in 1942 whose aim was to infiltrate and destabilize the civil service. It developed in the MUR and became a powerful source of Resistance activity, especially in the postal and telecommunications services and the railroads.

N.S.D.A.P.: Nazionalsozialistiche Deutsche Arbeiterspartei (National Socialist German Workers Party). Abbreviation of the Nazi Party.

NUREMBERG INTERNATIONAL MILITARY TRIBUNAL: On 18 October 1945, the trial of Nazi criminals and organisations began in Nuremberg, the city where the big Nazi rallies took place. The four charges were conspiracy, crimes against peace and war of agression, war crimes and crimes against humanity.  The defendants’ sentences were read out in court on October 1946. Twelve were sentenced to death by hanging, including Göring, Kaltenbrunner, Keitel and Sauckel, the head of the forced labour programme throughout occupied Europe. The doctors trial took place later.
