KANINCHEN: literally, “pet rabbit”, but used in the sense of “guinea pig”. Referred to deportees on whom the Nazis performed experiments, in particular at Ravensbrück.

KAPO: deportee in charge of a labour commando or a department, for example the Baukommando Kapo or Effektenkammer Kapo. Usually chosen from among common-law deportees (greens), they were, with few exceptions, zealous auxiliaries of the S.S. and committed horrible acts of torture and brutality. The word is a contraction of “KAmaraden POlitzei”.

KGF: Kriegsgefangene. Nazi category of classification in the camps: prisoner of war.

KOMMANDO: a camp labour detail or department.

K.Z. or K.L.: the abbreviations for “Konzentrationslager” (concentration camp). K.Z. was the familiar acronym used at first; KL, followed by the first letter in
